TBT: Favorite Looks of The Striped Complex

“For #TBT  I wanted to reminisce on my top favorite looks so far on the blog. I am currently working on ways to make this little space on the internet, one that reflects not only my personal style but also one that brings you inspiration and information on everything Fashion, Beauty and Travel. These three looks reflect my style and how I have adapted from wearing boots and sweaters and scarfs everyday while living in England to being home and adapting my style to living in Puerto Rico. The setting for this photo shoot is Old San Juan, one of my favorite places in the world. It is full of history, romanticism and beautiful sights. A must visit for everyone! The outfit details will be found in the direct links beneath each outfit.”

OOTD: Take Home Everywhere

“ When I am far away, sometimes I get homesick. I found this beautiful and incredibly soft tshirt from The Home T, an online shop who donate a portion of profits to the Multiple Schlerosis Research. How awesome is that? With this trendy tshirt, I can keep home, Puerto Rico, close to my heart and also pair it up with a skorts or shorts! During the summer I like to keep things pretty simple and definitely live by the motto: Less is More. A pair of white skorts can be styled with virtually any colour or printed top, therefore, making it a very versatile item of clothing. I also like to be ready for unpredictable weather, and with the Longchamp I do not have to worry about getting my important things wet!”

How to start blogging: Books

I have been following and enjoying blogs for the last 3 years. They were my little escape from outside troubles. I looked up to these fabulous women not only for new tips on how to do my makeup, or how to pair up my favorite blue heels, but also I followed these blogs and discovered that it was something I could achieve as well. I mean, I loved makeup, I loved shopping and I have travelled, so why not put it all up in one place for the world (aka my friends) to see?  When I  decided to put forward this wonderful idea, I had to research… ALOT! I had no clue on where to start! Coming from a journalism background, I was still trying to find my “niche”, that special something that made me want to write and create. One night, I went online for inspiration on where to find my inner Carrie Bradshaw/Elizabeth Gilbert.. I had the degree.. I just needed the push! I found courses in both Fashion and Travel Journalism in London and decided to take them. BEST DECISION EVER! I learned so much about what it takes to become a fashion journalist and a travel writer! Not only that, but I also attended a blogging seminar with the creator of the Shop Girl Diaries, Emily Benet and I learned a lot on how to actually start a blog!( If you are ever in London and she’s giving her blogging seminars, TAKE IT!) Along the tips and information I have learned, there where a few books I picked up that truly helped me understand and guided me through this process. Frankly, I prefer a good book that will allow me to go back on the information that I need anytime I want. I am still learning, but with the help of these books and keeping up with the latest in fashion/travel/beauty/everythingILove I think I am on the right track! I hope these books help you as much as they have helped me!

General Blogging:

1. Get Rich Blogging (Zoe Griffin): Now, I know it is very difficult to “get rich blogging” but this book is full with useful tips on everything from how to start a blog all the way to tips for every blogger imaginable (fashion, food, parenting, celebrity news etc). I definitely recommend it!

2. English for Journalists (Wynford Hicks): Yes, I know English.. it is my second language and some people find it hard to believe that it is not my mother tongue. However, in writing it always helps to have refreshers on pointers and rules of the English language that I may or may not have forgotten from way back in 5th grade. Even for native speakers, a good guide book helps clean up your blog and make it look professional.

1. In Fashion (Anne Marie Iverson): This book was on my suggested readings for my Fashion Journalism course and it has been a great help. The introduction is by the great Diane von Furstenberg and it covers all aspects of fashion, not just writing about it. It provides great insight on how to start your fashion career!

2. Fashion: The ultimate book of Costume and Style: During one of my fashion journalism classes we were asked to watch a catwalk and describe everything we saw coming down the runway. I freaked out! I knew that I liked what I saw but I had no idea on how to describe it! I saw all the patterns and colour schemes and fabrics, and I knew they reminded me of something, but that something had no name in my mind. I asked one of my colleagues and she suggested this marvelous and HUGE book. It covers the history of fashion, like no other, from prehistory up until modern times. It has an amazing illustrated glossary as well as reference to help with writing! I love it!

3. Decades of Fashion (Harriet Worsley): This picture book covers everything from La Belle Epoque to present times. It is illustrated as well with the right amount of information to explain each era!

1. Travel Writing (L. Peat O’neil) : This book on travel writing is great to give you an idea on what it takes to become a travel writer. As I learned in class, travel writing is not quite the same as travel journalism, although they both hold hands when it comes to the final product. This book gives you examples and practice guides to help you achieve your dreams of telling the world about your dream travel story.

2. Lonely Planet’s Guide to Travel Writing: Lonely Planet compiles in this book its best tips and great advice from its writers, editors, and agents. What’s better than getting expert advice, than from Lonely Planet’s finest? These are just some of the books I have used and still use for reference when it comes to blogging and journalism. I am an avid reader so throw in monthly travel and fashion magazines and a few visits to some of my favorite blogs and I am all set!

Next book review will be all about the books that inspire me, that make me want to be a better person and in return, a better blogger. If you have other suggestions, feel free to comment and share!

OOTD: Floral Prints

For a fun  night out I opted for a very printed floral romper. It was out of my comfort zone to wear that much print on one piece, but as soon as I put it on, I loved it!  The bright combination of colors and patterns is what brought me to this romper. It was very important for me accessorise accordingly as the romper is the only key item that should grab attention. I paired it with a like-colored purse and neutral black shoes. This romper is very figure hugging and it fits in all the right places! As it falls into the short side, it makes my legs look so much longer and I love it! As for the shoes, I am in love with this pair from New Look! Be on the look out as I will be wearing them quite frequently!   Boohoo is one of our favorite online stores because it offers quality items for very good prices and they ship to the USA! Check them out!

Thailand: Photodiary Part 1

During the summer I had the opportunity to visit Asia for the first time! It was a trip of a lifetime. Our first stop was Thailand! My friends and I spent 2 weeks enjoying the sun and the heat after what seemed like the longest winter in England. Our first stop in Thailand was Bangkok, the capital. With over 60 million inhabitants, Bangkok is definitely a busy city. The beauty of it, however, lies in its rich buddhist culture which is ev  er present in every corner.  We stayed at the Galleria 10 Sukhumvit and we could not be happier with the hotel and the staff! We were very happy during our stay and the hotel was beautiful and truly affordable! Although we did not spend enough time in the city, I enjoyed and learned very much! Here are a few of my favorite pictures of our stay!  Stay tuned for more pics of the trip!

OOTD: Leopard & Green

For today’s OOTD I throw it back to the end of the summer in London. With the beautiful Wembley Stadium as a backdrop, I decided to spice a leopard print with a pop of color.  The mint color of the blouse and the leopard print, together looked perfect. It gives the right contrasts between prints without looking too overwhelming. The accessories and bag were kept neutral to keep the focus on the clothing. I am definitely looking forward to styling these high waisted trousers more! Happy Weekend!

Top 5 Mascaras

Recently, while going through my makeup to get ready, I noticed something. I AM A MASCARA HOARDER! I have so many, and its embarrasing to admit that I did not realize it. I have everything, from high end to drugstore and I decided to feature on this week’s Beauty Post, my Top 5 favorite mascaras! I am very specific about what I like in my mascara. As I like to think I have good lashes ( thank you Mommy and Daddy! ), what I look for is more volume than length, although if a mascara provides both then its THE ONE. Im also very particular about the brush. My favorite mascara has a “plastic” brush with very short bristles which allow me to really get up in my lash line and separate all my lashes. However, I have been loving two mascaras that have bigger brushes and the shape of the bristles are quite different, so I can say I’m expanding my mascara horizon! Here are my Top 5. What is your favorite mascara?

1.Rocket Volum’ Express (Maybelline) – This is hands- down, no questions asked, my FAVORITE mascara. Ever since I’ve had it, it has become my go to girl. It gives amazing volume and really separates the lashes creating the perfect look. Sometimes, it looks like you are wearing falsies. I LOVE IT! Its waterproof version does the job as well. ( I own it, since I’m one emotional gal.) Available in your favorite drugstore both in the UK and the USA.

2. Wonder Lash Mascara (Oriflame) I discovered this brand from Sweden and this mascara through Latest in Beauty and I am in love with it. The brush is quite thin, so it really separates the lashes and elongates them. I like to wear this mascara when I do not wear to much makeup as the formula is quite thin, but it adds the perfect length and volume to define your eyes during those no makeup-makeup days.  It retails for £8.45 in the UK.

3. They’re Real (Benefit) – I received the They’re Real mascara as a sample, and after much hype about it, I decided to give it a go. I am very impressed with it, as it gives enough volume and length to your lashes. I would recommend this mascara to girls with shorter lashes because the tip is designed to really get close to your lash line and create that curl. Benefit is available in Boots and online in the UK £19.50/ USA & PR $23.00

rimmel london lash accelerator mascara

4. Lash Accelerator (Rimmel London)This is one of my newest mascaras from Rimmel London  and I am loving it ! After watching my favorite vloggers rave about it, time and time again, I decided to purchase it! It is not clunky, it separates your lashes beautiful and does not clump your lashes while creating a volumizing effect! I use it as a base for other mascaras, but it definitely can be worn on its own and I definitely recommend this mascara if you are looking for something new at the drugstore! Available at your favorite drugstore!

5.Better than Sex ( Too Faced)– This is my newest obssesion and the newest addition to my mascara family. At first glance, I did not like it. It seemed to clumpy and too much when you first open it. After application, WOW, THE LENGTH.. THE VOLUME! My lashes looked super long and curly! I was in love! I will definitely purchase again! In the UK it can be found in Debenhams for £19.00 and in the USA through Sephora or for $23.00.

What’s your favorite mascara?

OOTD: Faux Fur & Fringes

” I got to say I miss cold weather and layering! Living on this beautiful island can sometimes get a little too hot. The weather has been nice to us recently and has calmed and cooled down a bit and I have enjoyed this immensely. For today’s OOTD I decided to break out the leather and the fringes and the faux fur gillets. Hey, go big or go home, right? I just love the neutrality of this outfit and how the turquoise of the statement necklace makes everything come together. I added the little belt to accentuate my waist although it can also be worn loosely. I decided to layer the necklaces because I am a bit obsessed with the little dainty  necklace and the turquoise reminds me of my favorite princess, Pocahontas. I would love to pair this outfit with nude booties, but its not cold enough for that. So on our less than hot nights, I will be throughly enjoying this outfit!”
