Beauty Favorites: Lush Cosmetics

Lush sign

LUSH IS COMING TO PUERTO RICO. Yes, all in caps because that is how big my excitement is. Coming to the Mall of San Juan, our newest high-end mall that is set to open in March 2015, Lush has finally arrived to make our skincare problems go away. I have been a Lush fan ever since I first moved to Florida in 2009 and have visited their stores in the USA, Canada and in Lush’s  motherland, England. Yes, Lush comes to us directly from Poole, England and not only makes its products using fresh and natural ingredients, but also helps and supports diverse charities along the way. I am super excited to share with all of you, my top favorite products and I can’t wait to stock up on them as soon as the store opens. Not only is Lush famous for their amazing products, but also their customer service is consistently one of the best out there and that is truly something I am looking forward to experiencing here in Puerto Rico. Lush, Welcome to Puerto Rico and thank you for bringing me a piece of England as I miss it terribly. FINALLY!!

The Sacred Truth: This is my favorite fresh face mask. It contains fresh papaya that brightens your skin and feels amazing when applied fresh out of the fridge. The fresh face masks must be kept in the refrigerator and this is perfect for our hot climate. Nothing beats having a cool mask on your skin on a hot night. I heard it was discontinued because of reformulation so I am hoping to have my hands on another tub very soon! I must find a new favorite fresh face mask in the meantime!

Herbalism: This was the first product I ever tried from Lush and it was an eye opener in terms of how well my skin adapted to this cleanser. As you can tell, I am all for brightening products and this one achieves that. It is gentle on the skin but powerful enough to leave everything clean. My skin loved this product, and so did I.

Dream Cream Hand and Body Lotion: When I lived in England,  I spent close to 9 months without tanning, ( for an island girl like myself that is LONG!). I went on a trip to Thailand where I spent ALL of my time getting as much sun as  humanly possible and upon returning my body was super dry and peeling. Lush’s Dream Cream was the only moisturiser that actually worked and it calmed my skin. I highly recommend this for dry skin types.

Buffy: This body butter/exfoliator was  also one of my first Lush purchases ever and I have loved it since Day 1! It is incredibly moisturising when used in the shower and provides gentle exfoliation and afterwards you do not need worry about moisturising!

I love Juicy: This is my favorite clarifying shampoo. Whenever I feel that my hair needs to get rid of product build up or simply when I want it to look and feel really clean I reach for this shampoo! This will probably be the first product I purchase again at the new store as I have not found a clarifying shampoo like this one.

Rub Rub Rub

Rub Rub Rub: This body exfoliator will leave your skin feeling soft and refreshed. Its sea salt components acts as an astringent as well, although it is not recommended for facial use. Use it once or twice a week and your skin will thank you.

Turkish Delight

Turkish Delight: This AMAZING shower “smoothie” will leave you smelling of roses the entire day! Its creamy consistency makes it easy to apply in the shower and hydrated afterwards. THIS IS MY FAVORITE LUSH ITEM EVER! AND EVER! AND FOREVER. I am obsessed with the smell and I hope that Lush brings out a cream with this scent because it will be the best thing ever.

OOTD: Happy Birthday!

Happy Birthday to me! It’s been a great year, academically, I graduated with my MA in Translation and Intercultural Communications from the BEST UNIVERSITY IN ENGLAND, the University of Surrey (Go Stags!), I visited magnificent locations that I could only dream of when I was a child and met some incredible people along the way. I started The Striped Complex, my little space in the cyberspace and I got to share some of my favorite things with all of you. Someone told me that this year will be one of transitions and change and it certainly seems that way (in a great way!) I can only hope and work for this new year to be one filled with health, personal growth, success, wonderful memories, and lots of love (Mr. Right, I know you are out there!). Here’s to being 26 and feeling amazing!

To celebrate I decided to create a very casual #OOTD with my favorite things: a sequin blazer that fits perfectly, my favorite shorts, a basic white tee that I practically live in and my favorite heels of the moment. I can see myself wearing this outfit both during the day and at night. Who said sequins were meant for the night?

How to style: Basic Button Down White Shirt

One of my favorite items in my closet is a simple white button down shirt. It offers versatility like no other item of clothing. It wears extremely well across all seasons and can be dressed up or down. It pairs amazingly with shorts, jeans and even skirts. Here are some of my favorite looks that I will be using as inspiration for upcoming posts! Stay tuned & Happy Sunday!

TBT: Favorite Looks of The Striped Complex

“For #TBT  I wanted to reminisce on my top favorite looks so far on the blog. I am currently working on ways to make this little space on the internet, one that reflects not only my personal style but also one that brings you inspiration and information on everything Fashion, Beauty and Travel. These three looks reflect my style and how I have adapted from wearing boots and sweaters and scarfs everyday while living in England to being home and adapting my style to living in Puerto Rico. The setting for this photo shoot is Old San Juan, one of my favorite places in the world. It is full of history, romanticism and beautiful sights. A must visit for everyone! The outfit details will be found in the direct links beneath each outfit.”

OOTD: Take Home Everywhere

“ When I am far away, sometimes I get homesick. I found this beautiful and incredibly soft tshirt from The Home T, an online shop who donate a portion of profits to the Multiple Schlerosis Research. How awesome is that? With this trendy tshirt, I can keep home, Puerto Rico, close to my heart and also pair it up with a skorts or shorts! During the summer I like to keep things pretty simple and definitely live by the motto: Less is More. A pair of white skorts can be styled with virtually any colour or printed top, therefore, making it a very versatile item of clothing. I also like to be ready for unpredictable weather, and with the Longchamp I do not have to worry about getting my important things wet!”

How to start blogging: Books

I have been following and enjoying blogs for the last 3 years. They were my little escape from outside troubles. I looked up to these fabulous women not only for new tips on how to do my makeup, or how to pair up my favorite blue heels, but also I followed these blogs and discovered that it was something I could achieve as well. I mean, I loved makeup, I loved shopping and I have travelled, so why not put it all up in one place for the world (aka my friends) to see?  When I  decided to put forward this wonderful idea, I had to research… ALOT! I had no clue on where to start! Coming from a journalism background, I was still trying to find my “niche”, that special something that made me want to write and create. One night, I went online for inspiration on where to find my inner Carrie Bradshaw/Elizabeth Gilbert.. I had the degree.. I just needed the push! I found courses in both Fashion and Travel Journalism in London and decided to take them. BEST DECISION EVER! I learned so much about what it takes to become a fashion journalist and a travel writer! Not only that, but I also attended a blogging seminar with the creator of the Shop Girl Diaries, Emily Benet and I learned a lot on how to actually start a blog!( If you are ever in London and she’s giving her blogging seminars, TAKE IT!) Along the tips and information I have learned, there where a few books I picked up that truly helped me understand and guided me through this process. Frankly, I prefer a good book that will allow me to go back on the information that I need anytime I want. I am still learning, but with the help of these books and keeping up with the latest in fashion/travel/beauty/everythingILove I think I am on the right track! I hope these books help you as much as they have helped me!

General Blogging:

1. Get Rich Blogging (Zoe Griffin): Now, I know it is very difficult to “get rich blogging” but this book is full with useful tips on everything from how to start a blog all the way to tips for every blogger imaginable (fashion, food, parenting, celebrity news etc). I definitely recommend it!

2. English for Journalists (Wynford Hicks): Yes, I know English.. it is my second language and some people find it hard to believe that it is not my mother tongue. However, in writing it always helps to have refreshers on pointers and rules of the English language that I may or may not have forgotten from way back in 5th grade. Even for native speakers, a good guide book helps clean up your blog and make it look professional.

1. In Fashion (Anne Marie Iverson): This book was on my suggested readings for my Fashion Journalism course and it has been a great help. The introduction is by the great Diane von Furstenberg and it covers all aspects of fashion, not just writing about it. It provides great insight on how to start your fashion career!

2. Fashion: The ultimate book of Costume and Style: During one of my fashion journalism classes we were asked to watch a catwalk and describe everything we saw coming down the runway. I freaked out! I knew that I liked what I saw but I had no idea on how to describe it! I saw all the patterns and colour schemes and fabrics, and I knew they reminded me of something, but that something had no name in my mind. I asked one of my colleagues and she suggested this marvelous and HUGE book. It covers the history of fashion, like no other, from prehistory up until modern times. It has an amazing illustrated glossary as well as reference to help with writing! I love it!

3. Decades of Fashion (Harriet Worsley): This picture book covers everything from La Belle Epoque to present times. It is illustrated as well with the right amount of information to explain each era!

1. Travel Writing (L. Peat O’neil) : This book on travel writing is great to give you an idea on what it takes to become a travel writer. As I learned in class, travel writing is not quite the same as travel journalism, although they both hold hands when it comes to the final product. This book gives you examples and practice guides to help you achieve your dreams of telling the world about your dream travel story.

2. Lonely Planet’s Guide to Travel Writing: Lonely Planet compiles in this book its best tips and great advice from its writers, editors, and agents. What’s better than getting expert advice, than from Lonely Planet’s finest? These are just some of the books I have used and still use for reference when it comes to blogging and journalism. I am an avid reader so throw in monthly travel and fashion magazines and a few visits to some of my favorite blogs and I am all set!

Next book review will be all about the books that inspire me, that make me want to be a better person and in return, a better blogger. If you have other suggestions, feel free to comment and share!
